Chapter Eleven

Jett

The meeting with Hayes and Jude lasts a lot longer than usual because we have more to talk about than normal.

Hayes says, “There’s been work on Burke and the Creed.” He looks down the table at us solemn-faced, and whatever he’s about to say troubles him.

Jude adds, “I have intel, and the rumor that the Creed is back in Stonehaven seems to be true.”

“Do we know where they are?”

His voice is cold steel. Hayes is still not over the fact that the Creed killed Gus. He’d gone for revenge, got it, too, but there was a name on his list, and it was Special Agent Ellen Burke. She might not’ve been a trigger person or even the one who ordered the hit on us outside the bar, but she gave birth to the piece of shit who fired the shot. And Hayes is hell-bent on street justice.

When he isn’t on the computer trying to track the movements of any known member of the Devil’s Creed, Hayes takes day trips to the range to practice shooting. The kill shot is his. He called dibs.

Jude shakes his head. “No. But we know they’ve hired a trucking company to pick up a shipment that’s running through Stonehaven. My contact thinks it’s women.” He shrugs and tilts his head. “Girls, anyway. Probably young. The young ones bring in bigger money.”

We don’t necessarily sit on the upside of the law all the time but pimping and trafficking isn’t something any of us has the stomach for.

Jude pulls out a stack of missing person fliers. “These are all women and girls who are missing from the local area and the surrounding counties. All taken within the last 6 months.”

As I’m looking at the photos, my phone pings.

BRIELLE: Piper is officially missing. I’m going to the coffee shop on Tenth. It’s the last place she was seen. Sky is going to file a missing person report at the police station. Just thought I should let someone know where I’m going.

My guts clench.

ME: Meet me at Harlow Motors, and I’ll go with you.

I wait for her answer, and when the three dots flash, then disappear, I wait some more. The second-hand makes its round six or seven times before she answers.

BRIELLE: I’ll be fine. I took self-defense classes.

Damn stubborn woman.

ME: Please, Brielle. Come here first.

In my head, I can hear her sigh. The exasperated one.

“Jett?”

I look up at Jude. He’s not amused. We’re supposed to be plotting and planning. Supposed to be concerned for the missing women.

“Uh, yeah.” I don’t know if Piper is connected, but she could be, and that might be important.

“A friend of Brielle’s is… she might be anyway… missing.”

“A rich chick?”

I nod. “Yeah, but some of these…”

I sort through the pages I just looked through. “One from Brentwood. Another from Beverly Hills.” I move to another page. “Another from Beverly Hills. One from Monterey. This one’s from Hermosa Beach.” This should be all over the papers. All over the news, but I haven’t heard anything.
